Xiaoyuan Zhang

ATTORNEY | TROUBLESHOOTER

Xiaoyuan Zhang enjoys tackling complex legal challenges, especially those involving technical intricacies.  With a background in engineering, Xiaoyuan excels at navigating the intersection of law and technology.  A big believer in the notion that great communicators make their audiences feel smart, Xiaoyuan strives to break down even the most complicated concepts into accessible terms, making him an excellent interlocutor for experts and laymen alike.

Prior to joining Tyz Law Group, Xiaoyuan was a patent litigator at Fenwick & West LLP, where he gained experience in all stages of patent litigation, representing clients in federal courts around the country and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Boards.  He has represented clients spanning a wide range of industries and technologies from 3D fashion design software to video technology to targeted online advertising to cold chain solutions to medical diagnostics.  He had experience leading the technical review and analysis of patents, accused technologies and prior art, preparing expert and factual witnesses for depositions, and readying cases for trial.

Xiaoyuan holds a J.D. from Boston College Law School, where he participated in the prisoners’ rights clinic and convinced the Parole Board to reduce his client’s set-back period to merely two years (the time his client can make the next parole petition)—a big win given the set-back period’s typical three-to-fifteen-year range.  He also holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering with a Minor in Computer Science from Purdue University, where, as team lead, he successfully delivered a visual assistive application to visually challenged students at Purdue, driving the project to completion after it had been stalled for nearly a decade before his involvement.

A native speaker of Mandarin, Xiaoyuan is also proficient in several programming languages, including those used for general-purpose coding, web development, data analysis, and microcontroller programming.

Xiaoyuan is a member of both the California and New York Bar Associations.
