Tyz Law Group Welcomes Leading Intellectual Property Litigator and Games Industry Expert, Jennifer Kelly
Former Fenwick & West Partner Brings Unparalleled Games Industry Expertise to Firm
June 17, 2019 -- San Francisco -- Tyz Law Group announced today that leading intellectual property and commercial litigator, Jennifer Kelly, is joining the firm and will lead the games industry practice. Kelly is teaming up with her husband Ryan Tyz, founder of Tyz Law Group, after serving as partner at Fenwick & West, where she founded and co-chaired the Games Industry Group, served as chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property & Commercial Litigation Group, and led the Women’s Caucus – an internal initiative focused on supporting and advancing female attorneys.
“We are thrilled that Jennifer is joining the firm. Her depth of knowledge in commercial and IP litigation along with her deep expertise in the games industry brings unparalleled value to our clients,” said Tyz. “Jennifer and I met at Fenwick, and the qualities that drew me to her are the same qualities that make her such a valuable addition to the firm: she is one of the smartest and most strategic people I have ever known.”
Added Kelly, "The transition to Tyz Law Group is exciting because my practice is comprised of innovative companies that move fast and think outside the box, and need the same of their outside counsel. Tyz Law Group has built a unique platform that encourages these traits, focusing on personalization, efficiency and fixed fees. I will certainly miss being a part of Fenwick, where I practiced for 19 years, but I envision remaining closely aligned with the firm.” Jennifer Stanley, who will now serve as the sole chair of Fenwick’s games industry group, noted that “Jennifer is a wonderful colleague and we will continue to collaborate and work together to help our clients.”
A foremost authority on intellectual property issues in games, and one of the world’s leading experts on game cloning, Kelly serves as a strategic advisor to her clients, including helping them build and manage their IP portfolios, advising on how to design or modify games to avoid claims of infringement, and representing them in litigation when needed. She has led her clients to success in a number of high-profile copyright cases, including cases she filed or defended for clients King, Peak Games, Glu Mobile, Gram Games, Sega, Electronic Arts and Capcom.
In addition to her roles at Fenwick & West, Ms. Kelly served on the Executive Board of Techlaw, a network of 28 law firms around the world that serve clients in the technology sector. She was the first woman ever elected to Techlaw’s Executive Board, and served as Treasurer in 2018-2019. She also serves on the Board of the Video Game Bar Association.
Among her many industry honors and awards, Kelly has been named one of California’s "Top Intellectual Property Attorneys" and one of the “Top Entertainment Lawyers” by The Daily Journal, a list that honors the top 50 litigators and dealmakers reshaping the movie, music and games industries. For the third time in five years, this past May, Ms. Kelly was named “One of the Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business” by the San Francisco Business Times.
